Met office warns of another thundershower

GUWAHATI, April 26 � The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) here has warned of the possibility of thunder squall, with speed exceeding 60 km per hour, at one or two places over the NE region during the next 24 hours.

It has also forecast likelihood of rain or thundershower at many places over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh and at a few places over the rest of the region during the same period.

For the city and its adjoining areas, the RMC has predicted likelihood of a partly cloudy sky and its becoming generally cloudy during the next 24 hours.

It needs mention here that since March 27 last, 23 people were officially stated to be killed by the thunderstorms in different parts of the State.

Meanwhile, under the impact of the thunder squall that lashed the city with a speed of 104 km per hour on April 24, many areas of the city are groping in the dark even today.

An official press release here said that nearly 80 per cent to 85 per cent power supply has been restored in the city with priority being given to Gauhati Medical College Hospital, Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital, water supply schemes etc.

However, power supply at the Borjhar Airport and the neighbouring areas is still disrupted. Massive efforts are on and the officials have confirmed that power supply will be restored by this evening.

In Lower Assam, power supply would be restored partially in Goalpara, Kokrajhar and Dhubri towns by this evening, said the official press release.

The Government has also proposed to undertake a mass media campaign to prepare the people for such emergencies. The Emergency State Control Room set up in the State Secretariat has already started functioning.
