Merbeel eco-tourism project work begins

DIBRUGARH, Sept 26 � Work on the highly ambitious Merbeel eco-tourism project formally commenced today at a befitting inaugural ceremony at Sasoni under the Naharkatia Lagislative Assembly Constituency in the Dibrugarh district.

More than 20,000 people of the hundred-plus villages of the Sasoni area participated wholeheartedly in the inaugural programme, bringing about a festive mood in the area.

The project envisages development of the Merbeel, a defunct stream of the Buri Dehing river into an eco-tourism spot. The work would be supervised by the Merbeel Eco Tourism Project Development Committee, which has Moni Manik Gogoi as president, Jyoti Prasad Konwar as working president and Jiten Neog and Kailash Gogoi as secretaries.

Moni Manik Gogoi, a well-known social worker of the district, said the works would be financed under NREGA, and it is anticipated that the entire construction and development works on the project would cost about Rs 8 crore. The Deputy Commissioner of Dibrugarh district has accorded his approval to the project, and funding of the project should not be a hindrance.

The CMD of Oil India Limited, N M Borah, the company�s director (human resource), N K Bharali, and the company�s resident chief executive, Nirmal Kumar Agarwal were present at the work commencement ceremony today. Also present was the Dibrugarh DC, G D Tripathi. Borah said in his speech that his company would be glad to be of any assistance in the endeavour.
