By STAFF correspondent

SHILLONG, May 28 - After over two months, the famous Police Bazaar here a commercial hub of the State will reopen in a staggered manner from Friday, official sources said today.

The decision to reopen shops in the market was taken by the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner after the State Government asked the district administration to take a decision in this regard.

Deputy Commissioner M War Nongbri has informed The Assam Tribune that permission to reopen identified shops would be granted from tomorrow. Identified shops in the Police Bazaar will reopen in a staggered manner, Nongbri said.

The market will maintain strict protocols and operate in a staggered manner to avoid crowds. Police Bazaar is usually crammed with shoppers; therefore, authorities will take steps to avoid crowding.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya capital today witnessed some semblance of normalcy after several months as a number of shops reopened following the State Governments relaxation of the lockdown restrictions.

The Meghalaya Government has allowed shops selling products and clothes for babies, textiles and ready-made garments, kitchen utensils and household electronics, and automobile showrooms to operate.

Moreover, establishments offering services like kitchen appliances repair and travel agencies have also been allowed to operate. Other shops already back in business include those selling essential commodities, liquor stores, and mobile, hardware and electrical goods stores.

Meanwhile, a few local taxis were also seen plying on the roads. The Deputy Commissioner said they were probably requisitioned or on emergency services with requisite passes.

No decision has been taken on resuming public transport in the State capital as of now, Ningbri pointed out.

On the other hand, the Meghalaya Cabinet has decided to strengthen the existing rules and guidelines relating to educational institutions in the State. The Government will make permission to run educational institutes stricter if necessary guidelines are not followed.
