Meghalaya virus cases climb to 248

SHILLONG, July 12 - Thirty-three persons have tested positive for COVID-19 in the State in the past 24 hours, taking the active cases to 248.

Of the total active cases, 178 are BSF personnel. Two from the Air Force and two others from the armed force have also tested positive and the rest are civilians.

The BSF headquarters have been declared as a containment zone and nobody is allowed to enter or exit the premises. Health and district officials are coordinating with the BSF officials for medical and administrative needs.

Residents living close to the headquarters at Nongymsong, Mawpat and Rynjah would undergo random testing from Wednesday. Moreover contact tracing in several parts of the state capital is on.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya police have temporarily closed down two police outposts to carry out sanitization in these outposts following positive cases being reported.

The Nongmynsong police outpost in East Khasi Hills district was temporarily shut down as a precautionary measure after police officials came into close proximity with a secondary contact while discharging their official duties.

The Saipung police outpost in East Jaintia Hills district was also temporarily shut down after a constable tested positive for COVID-19. Officials said, swab samples of all the police personnel posted at Nongmynsong and Saipung have been collected and sent for testing.
