Meghalaya unhappy over being ignored by BCCI

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, June 12 - While lauding Board of Control for Cricket in Indias move to promote sports in Meghalaya, the Congress-led Government here isnt happy at the Board for ignoring it while announcing developmental programmes.

BCCI, led by its president Anurag Thakur, BJP MP, announced recently plans for construction of an indoor cricket academy together with a gymnasium at Polo Grounds here.

During his visit, the 41-year-old BCCI president examined a coaching camp for under-19, spent some time playing with the visually impaired and later interacted with local cricket officials and BJP functionaries.

This is not the way to go about promoting sports. We dont know why State Sports department was kept out of the loop while promoting cricket in the State, Sports Minister Zenith Sangma told The Assam Tribune.

He said, normally Sports department is informed about such initiatives. The initiatives being taken by BCCI is laudable, but at the same time there needs to be some basic courtesies displayed, Sangma added.

Nonetheless, Sangma said, the Sports department would extend all assistance to BCCI if it requires. We are always ready to help when it comes to sports, he said.

Meanwhile, Sangma said, the State Government has asked the Indian Institute of Management to draft the State Sports Policy. The draft would be ready soon, the Minister informed.
