By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, June 6 - Meghalaya is soon going to adopt the State Water policy for better management of this precious resource in the State.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today informed during an international seminar on Understanding Water Crisis: The Way Forward, organised by Synod College here that the policy would be presented before the Cabinet soon.

The State Water Policy takes a holistic approach to water and encompasses budgeting, prioritising and equitisation of water supply and protection and conservation of catchment and springshed areas, he said.

Sangma expressed hope of getting support and cooperation from the public once the Water Policy is in public domain.

Water professionals are creating awareness in the villages with the active participation of the public, which would determine the success of the Water Policy, he said.

Suggesting check dams and water reservoirs in the villages, with decentralised system of management involving local bodies, Sangma said, such a system in place would mitigate the problem of water crisis.

The CM also stressed on the need to have a policy on the pollution of water sources and bodies. Earlier, Sangma said that despite various departments and organisations intervention water crisis still persist everywhere.

The issue of water crisis is a global cause of worry and through the creation of Jal Shakti Ministry at the Centre and the State of Meghalaya having its own State Water Policy, there shall be a focussed approach on this issue, Sangma said.

Meanwhile, the CM today inspected the site of the Games Village and the main stadium at Umsawli for National Games 2022. At the Main Stadium with a capacity for 25-30 thousand spectators, several other infrastructure, including a Swimming Pool, a Multi-Utility Indoor Stadium and housing area to accommodate 2,000-3,000 people would be built.

Sangma hoped the Centre would clear the proposal of the State Government to have one Disability Stadium in Shillong for the whole of Eastern India.
