Meghalaya to conduct security audit of jails

By The Assam Tribune

SHILLONG, Aug 14 - The Meghalaya Government will conduct a security audit of all jails in the State following a failed attempt by arrested hardcore cadres of proscribed militant outfits to break out of the high security district jail here on August 12.

The order also came in the wake of a report that over 30 jailbreaks had taken place between 1991 and 2010 resulting in 185 under trial prisoners escaping the State jails.

We have ordered security audit of all jails in the State, State Home Minister Roshan Warjri said. She said the audit was necessary to find out the lapses, if any, of the jails across the State.

The order came after several militants lodged at the high security cells of the district jail here made an attempt to break out of the jail, which was foiled.

The militants involved were from the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council, Garo National Liberation Army and ULFA. PTI
