SHILLONG, June 23 - Congress MLA MM Danggo�s resignation from the Meghalaya Assembly has been accepted by Speaker Donkupar Roy, but there has been a surprising haste in doing so.
Danggo addressed his resignation letter to Roy, who was in Kolkata. It was allegedly handed over to Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira �secretly� on Thursday evening by one of Danggo�s aides.
An official from the Assembly Secretariat, Andrew Simon, immediately flew to Kolkata on Friday afternoon and by late evening he sent press notes to the media here that Roy had accepted Danggo�s resignation.
Roy was back in the city today and it is therefore significant that an official had to fly to Kolkata and not wait for a few hours for Roy to get back here and accept the resignation.
There was also high drama and behind-the-scenes politicking during the resignation of Danggo. It is alleged that two Cabinet ministers handed over Danggo�s resignation at the Deputy Speaker�s residence, although Shira denied it.
It has been close to 48 hours and Danggo is nowhere to be seen. He has not briefed the media on his decision. Neither has he given any statement so far, which is very unlike Danggo.
Meanwhile, South Tura MLA Agatha Sangma is likely to resign before July 10 to pave the way for Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to contest from the vacant seat. Conrad has to contest within six months from the date he took oath as the Chief Minister. The by-elections to Ranikor (which Danggo represents) and South Tura are likely to be held simultaneously.
