SHILLONG, June 14 - Meghalaya will join the Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Swashthya Suraksha Mission, on a convergence mode with the Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) transitioning to the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Meghalaya Minister for Health and Family Welfare, AL Hek, who was present at the Health Ministers Conclave in New Delhi today, made the commitment, officials said.

The consultative conference was convened by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which was attended by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda and Health and Family Welfare ministers from States.

In his speech at the conclave, Hek said the MHIS, which is in its third phase of implementation since its launch in 2012, has won several awards like the Skoch Order of Merit and was shortlisted for the Prime Ministers Award for Excellence in 2014. Through the scheme, 4,36,788 households and 15,57,008 persons have benefited in 201 empanelled hospitals in the State and the country.

Under the MHIS, the existing health insurance cover is Rs 2,80,000, while the new National Health Protection Mission will provide a health insurance cover of Rs 5,00,000.

The number of households identified by the Government of India for the National Health Protection Mission is 3,39,779, while the rest of the beneficiaries will be covered by the State Government.

Hek informed that the Government of Meghalaya would universalise the National Health Protection Mission to cover all eligible households, co-branding with the MHIS, so that the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Swashthya Suraksha Mission or the National Health Protection Mission are availed by the people of Meghalaya in the empanelled hospitals.

An MoU was signed by Pravin Bakshi, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Megha Health Insurance Scheme in the presence of Hek.
