SHILLONG, Feb 26 - Election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat will be held in the Meghalaya Assembly on March 26.
The date of the polls was fixed by the Election Commission of India on Tuesday last. The election in Meghalaya will be held simultaneously with 54 other Rajya Sabha seats in 16 States, which will fall vacant.
The tenure of current member Wansuk Syiem, who belongs to the Congress, will end on April 12.
However, the ruling coalition in the State is likely to get a candidate of its own � either from the NPP or the other regional parties � elected to the Upper House this time. Meghalaya has a 60-member House.
The result of the election will be declared on the same day of the polling (March 26) after 5 pm. The last date for filing nomination papers has been fixed on March 13 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 18.
