SHILLONG, Nov 1 - Meghalaya was adjudged the second best governed State in the small States category in the Public Affairs Index (PAI)-2020 released by the Public Affairs Centre.
�Happy to share that Meghalaya has been ranked the 2nd Best Governed State in India in the Small States Category based on the Public Affairs Index 2020 of an annual ranking of the states of India on governance performance,� Chief Minister Conrad Sangma tweeted, expressing happiness over the development.
The States were ranked by Bengaluru-based Public Affairs Centre, a not-for-profit think tank headed by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K Kasturirangan.
Meghalaya with a total score of 0.797 points was behind Goa, which was adjudged the best governed State in the small States category in terms of governance.
According to PAC, the governance performance is analysed in the context of sustainable development defined by the three pillars of equity, growth and sustainability.
Although Meghalaya�s overall rank was second, the State featured at the bottom of the list along with Mizoram in terms of sustainability. In terms of growth, Meghalaya and Mizoram featured at the top.
Our Gangtok Correspondent adds: Sikkim has been ranked the fourth best governed State in the small States category in the annual ranking. The 5th consecutive annual edition of PAI 2020 was launched on Friday in a virtual event.
PAI 2020 also features an analysis of States� performance over time (2015-2020) and inter-State comparisons on performance. Likewise, Kerala has emerged as the best-governed State in the large States category.
Sikkim Chief Minister PS Golay expressed his pleasure and stated that the State government will continue with its endeavour to ensure welfare of the people of the State. He also thanked the citizens for their contributions and urged them to carry on with their efforts to transform Sikkim into a model State.
In the small States category, the worst performers with negative points were Manipur (-0.363), Delhi (-0.289) and Uttarakhand (-0.277), the report said. Chandigarh emerged the best governed in the category of UTs with 1.05 PAI points, followed by Puducherry (0.52) and Lakshadweep (0.003). Dadar and Nagar Haveli (-0.69), Andaman, Jammu and Kashmir (-0.50) and Nicobar (-0.30) were the least performers.
