Meghalaya police on high alert

By The Assam Tribune

SHILLONG, Oct 30 Meghalaya police have been put under high alert on the possible presence of terror sleeper cells in the State in view of the States porous border with Bangladesh, a senior officer said today.

Certain pockets in the States plain belts region in the Garo Hills close to Assam and in eastern parts have been kept under tight vigil following the National Investigation Agency (NIA) closely monitoring Assam and Meghalaya as part of its investigation into the Burdwan blast case, the officer said.

Though the NIA is yet to officially communicate with the State police in this regard, the SPs of all sensitive districts have been asked to keep a close eye on any possible terror sleeper cells and to act appropriately, Director General of Police PJP Hanaman said.

The DGPs statement was corroborated by the Home department in which a senior official admitted that certain pockets in the Garo Hills region and also in the city are potential hideouts of anti-national elements.

Meghalaya which shares a 443 km-long border with Bangladesh has always been taken advantages of and used by extremist elements to slip in to and from Bangladesh in view of the porous international borders, the Home department official said.

Certain routes which have been identified have also been shared with the BSF manning the international border to take necessary actions, he said.

Home Minister Roshan Warjri said necessary instructions to departments concerned and necessary measures have already been initiated to ensure that national security is not compromised with. PTI
