SHILLONG, June 5 - Meghalaya today planted around 1.5 million saplings across the State with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma leading the plantation drive.
The mass plantation campaign was carried out under the �Meghalaya One Citizen One Tree� campaign. One million saplings were planted in 306 spring sheds across the State.
Moreover, across all the 11 districts, 46 Community and Rural Development Blocks were chosen in which ten villages per block planted 1,000 saplings each.
The plantation drive was also undertaken in different schools to create awareness on climate change and protection of the environment.
�Congratulations to all officials and team members who made it possible to plant 1.5 million saplings in one day. This is the beginning and we should continue to plant saplings,� Sangma said after planting saplings at Langkyrdem village and other places in East Khasi Hills district.
The massive plantation drive was undertaken by the Soil and Water Conservation Department with funding from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change under the National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change.
Moreover, different agencies and organisations celebrated the World Environment Day and carried out plantation drives across the State. Some of the organisations that celebrated the day and took up plantation drives included the BSF, CRPF, etc.
Imphal Correspondent adds: The World Environment Day was widely observed in Manipur on Wednesday. The main observance was held under the aegis of the Directorate of Environment in Imphal.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said the State Government would launch a �Green Manipur, Clean Manipur� campaign to protect the environment and combat the impact of climate change.
More than 50,000 tree saplings, mostly of local varieties, were planted within one hour across 950 schools and 80 colleges on the occasion.
The initiative was taken up by the Education Department in collaboration with the Forest Department and All Manipur Working Journalists Union.
Manipur Education Minister Th Radheshyam attended the inauguration of the mass plantation programme at SK Ideal High School, Konthoujam, in Imphal West district.
Dimapur Correspondent adds: The Nagaland Government distributed three lakh saplings to the public in all the districts across the State on the World Environment Day on Wednesday.
Forest officials were sent to different districts to distribute the saplings to the public free of cost.
Speaking on the occasion, Nagaland Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister CM Chang appealed to all organisations, the church, student bodies, government departments and public to care and nurture the environment, adding �environmental degradation will affect everyone and it is our joint responsibility to prevent that�.
Chang said that under the Nagaland Forest Management Project, afforestation projects would be undertaken.
