Meghalaya pays rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi

SHILLONG, Oct 2 - Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 151st birth anniversary here at the Meghalaya Main Secretariat.

Several other programmes were also organised across the State to mark the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation.

Most of the programmes were held online in order to avoid crowding in view of the pandemic.

Other programmes included display of archival photographs in the custody of the Department of Arts and Culture, display of contemporary paintings and visual art through online mode reflecting the philosophy of Gandhi.

A project for waste management and maintenance of cleanliness was today launched at Khyndialad (Police Bazaar) by the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Isawanda Laloo.

The programme was organised by Meghalaya Urban Development Authority in collaboration with the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and the office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, with the participation of Police Bazar Welfare Group.

Laloo said the SMB�s vision is to create a long-term sustainable plan to ensure the cleanliness of Police Bazar. She said it is the duty of all stakeholders to maintain the aesthetic beauty by maintaining cleanliness with proper disposal of waste.

She also lauded the hard work of the SMB workers who have been in the frontline in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. Laloo said that the pandemic is a reminder about the importance of cleanliness and maintaining hygiene for everyone.

The Assam Rifles planted more than 42,000 saplings and also organised a cleanliness drive in all the garrisons of the force under �Swachhta Abhiyan� on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. Officers and personnel of all ranks and their families paid homage to the Father of Nation by taking part in the event.
