Meghalaya NGO blames joint cadre for row

By A Correspondent

SHILLONG, July 10 The Maitshaphrang Movement (MSM) has blamed the joint cadre system for the persisting border row between Meghalaya and Assam.

Addressing a press conference here today, the MSM convener Michael N Syiem stated that the system was one of the factors which have been responsible for Meghalaya losing land to Assam.

Syiem said that loyalty of the cadres will always be divided so long the cadre system is followed.

The MSM has demanded that the joint cadre system of IAS and IPS officers of Assam-Meghalaya be abolished.

Welcoming the call for a boundary commission to solve the border row, the MSM said, First and foremost the joint cadre system should be abolished and have officers loyal to Meghalaya.

The demand is nothing new as even the legislators of the State, including HSPDP supremo has been demanding this on the floor of the House.

Syiem also expressed his concern over the nonchalant attitude of the people of Meghalaya over their lacklustre response to the border row. If the people are concerned they should not confine to being paper tigers but come and protest in the open, the MSM convener said.

Taking the example of the Naga tribe, the MSM leader said that they fought to defend their land from encroachment by Assam.
