SHILLONG, Sept 9 - The Meghalaya Assembly on Monday witnessed an unprecedented incident in which a legislator banged his table and hurled an expletive after his microphone stopped working during question hour.
Gambegre MLA Saleng Sangma, who is also the chairman of the Assembly�s Committee of Privileges, rose during question hour and hurled the expletive against those responsible for maintaining the sound system in the Assembly.
The incident took place as Deputy Speaker Timothy Shira disallowed North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum to raise a supplementary question on an inter-state boundary dispute question. Shira moved on to the next question, as Nongrum was inaudible due to problems with his microphone.
As the Deputy Speaker disallowed the additional question, Sangma stood up to argue on behalf of Nongrum. He first banged the table and hurled the expletive as stunned members of the House and visitors in the gallery, including schoolchildren, looked on.
The Deputy Speaker did not expunge the words immediately, but after the question hour, Congress MLA and former Speaker Charles Pyngrope requested the Deputy Speaker to expunge the �unparliamentary words� used by the MLA.
