Meghalaya launches online tax-paying facility

SHILLONG, July 15 � Meghalaya has become the second State in the region to have online facility to pay income tax.

Taxpayers may now clear their dues through the Internet by logging on to www.meghalayaonline.gov.in.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma officially launched the system at Yojana Bhavan Auditorium here, which will now enable registered taxpayers in the State to pay their taxes online.

With the launch, Meghalaya became the second State in the region and the 21st State in the country to have such a facility.

The website is integrated with the State Bank of India and also with the Treasury Offices in the State. At present only the SBI is having the facility.

Speaking on the occasion, Sangma termed the launch as a �technological milestone� that will ensure efficiency, transparency and productivity. He urged the registered taxpayers to avail the facility which is �hassle free and also eco friendly� in all aspects.

Chief Secretary WMS Pariat said that the system will benefit the State government enormously and will also help the Finance Department in monitoring the financial position of the State with ease.

The launching programme was organized by the Finance Department in collaboration with the SBI and the National Informatics Centre (NIC), Shillong Centre.
