Meghalaya landslides kill 5

SHILLONG, Sept 25 - Five persons have died and three others are missing following incessant rains and subsequent landslides and flash floods across the State in the past 24 hours. Two persons died after a landslide hit Lumparing in the State capital. Three others are yet to be traced in the same area.

The State Fire and Emergency Services, State Disaster Relief Force and State police personnel were pressed into service to locate the missing persons. At Madanriting, a young girl was killed in another landslide. In a separate incident, a minor girl and another person were swept away by the flash flood near Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills district. Several other people were injured in the landslides.

Officials said that search and rescue operations are on to trace the missing persons. Necessary compensation will be paid to the next of kin of those killed and injured.

Landslides were also reported on the National Highway in West Khasi Hills district. Roads were damaged and trees uprooted.

Meanwhile, the Met department has warned of more rains in almost all districts of the State in the next 24 hours.
