Meghalaya Govt has no role in UCIL mining

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, July 7 - Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today said that the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) is on its own when it comes to uranium mining in Meghalayas West Khasi Hills district.

UCIL recently floated a tender in the local newspapers inviting Expression of Interest for an open cast mine, processing plant and other activities associated with mining at Mawthabah in South West Khasi Hills.

Sangma said, the Corporation is going ahead with the mining project at its own risk and indicated the State has no role in it. Uranium mining is being opposed in the State and so far the project has been stalled by NGOs.

The Chief Minister cautioned that in the event of any situation arising out of the UCIL push for uranium mining, the State Government would take appropriate decisions.
