Meghalaya Governor attends 6th USTM convocation

GUWAHATI, Dec 15 - The sixth convocation of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) was held here today in the presence of Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik and a galaxy of vice chancellors and other dignitaries, stated a press release received here.

Governor Malik, who is the Visitor to the USTM, presided over the academic event and awarded the degrees.

The event began with a procession led by the Registrar of the university and attended by Academic Council members, members of the Board of Governors, Deans of Schools, heads of departments and other professors.

The welcome address was delivered by USTM Chancellor M Hoque. Prof GD Sharma, USTM VC, presented the university report. The convocation address was delivered virtually by Prof DP Singh, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Altogether 1,332 graduates were awarded degrees, out of whom 10 scholars got PhD degrees, 925 students were awarded postgraduate degrees and 397 students bagged undergraduate degrees. A honorary DSc was awarded to Prof Sanjay Deshmukh, former VC and Professor of Life Science, University of Mumbai, for outstanding contribution to the field of academic administration and promotion of science, technology and innovation. A honorary DLitt was awarded to Patricia Mukhim, Editor of The Shillong Times, for her outstanding contribution to education, journalism and literature.

The Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Best Post Graduate Award was awarded to Rezwana Farhin from the Department of Mathematics and the PA Sangma Best Under Graduate Award went to Nilotpal Deka from the Department of Physics.

Prof Vinod Kr Jain, VC, Tezpur University, and Prof SK Srivastava, VC, North Eastern Hill University, were also present in the convocation, the release added.
