SHILLONG, Oct 11 - The long-standing demand of the people of Garo Hills has been fulfilled with the opening of the Chief Ministers Secretariat at Tura in West Garo Hills today.

The secretariat has been set up at the office of the Commissioner of Divisions at Dakopgre in Tura. The people of the Garo Hills region will be able to send requests for appointment with the Chief Minister and other related matters through this new office.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will be available in this office during his visit to Tura. The Tura Chief Ministers Secretariat will function on all week days, an official release said. A dedicated officer has been posted at the office.

According to the Chief Minister, people from far-flung areas of the Garo Hills need not come to the State capital to submit applications and proposals. It is time-consuming and puts a lot of financial burden on them. Through this office, people from the Garo Hills can apprise or send their letters of request to me or submit proposals, Sangma said.

The Chief Minister said that through technology, he would interact with visitors in Tura in the near future. The idea is to bring people closer to the administration and the Government and ensure that their problems, concerns and issues are heard, he added.

Sangma said that the Governments endeavour would be to ensure that maximum benefit of welfare schemes and programmes reach the people. I will issue necessary instructions to officials to provide information and assist them in availing of benefits of different government programmes and schemes, he added.

Efforts will be put in to help people in need so that they can follow up their cases. Meanwhile, Sangma met officials and members of the public at his new office in Tura during the day.
