Meghalaya bid to set up border outpost in Assam land foiled

By Correspondent

DIPHU, June 24 - After almost a nine-day standoff, the Meghalaya administrations further bid to establish an advance outpost inside Assam territory was foiled by the Assam Police.

The State police with the help of local residents foiled the bid of Meghalaya Police to set up a border outpost at Pisiyar village of West Karbi Anglong district on Saturday.

According to official information received here, a team of Meghalaya Police entered the Assam side and occupied a house belonging to a local club at Pisiyar village, 4 kilometres inside Assam territory near the inter-State boundary and attempted to set up a border outpost in the area. However, Assam Police personnel forced the team to leave the place and demolish the camp with the help of local people.

Earlier, Meghalaya Police forced Assam Police to demolish a BOP at Khatkhasla in West Karbi Anglong on June 13 claiming the area to be within Meghalaya even as the BOP was very much inside Assam, as claimed by a section of local residents and Assam officials.

A large mob from Meghalaya forced the Assam Police to dismantle the makeshift BOP and its personnel were forced to withdraw from the place.

It may be mentioned here that Meghalaya has been demanding Block-I and Block-II of Karbi Anglong since a long time. On September 7 last year, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) demanded Assam to transfer Block-I and Block-II to Meghalaya.
