SHILLONG, Sept 9 - Election for the post of Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly would be held on September 13, Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira informed the House on Monday.
The Speaker�s post fell vacant following the demise of then Speaker and United Democratic Party president Donkupar Roy.
The Deputy Speaker announced that the date for filing of nomination papers before the Commissioner and Secretary and scrutiny was scheduled on September 10. The date for withdrawal of papers will be September 11 (till 3.30 pm) and voting would be held on September 13.
The NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has decided to field UDP legislator and cabinet minister Metbah Lyngdoh as its consensus candidate for the Speaker�s post. The opposition Congress would field Salmanpara MLA Winnerson D Sangma as its candidate. The MDA has 40 MLAs in the 60-member House and is likely to retain the Speaker�s post in the upcoming election.
