GUWAHATI, June 18 - The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) today held a meeting with various officials of the State Government on rainwater harvesting (RWH) and groundwater recharging (GWR) for urban flood management and water conservation in the city, at its conference hall.

Participants at the meeting suggested that the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) should implement the existing clauses of Guwahati building bylaws, which have provisions to make RWH and GWR compulsory for all the builders and the same should be enforced in the city.

Moreover, importance should be given to the awareness generation campaign to sensitise the general people in this regard, stated the participants.

The meeting put emphasis on how RWH and GWR can bring some solutions to urban flooding in the city.

Simple RWH structure could also help replenish the groundwater level, thereby facilitating the availability of water during the lean season.
