By Correspondent

PANDU, May 16 A meeting of the Guwahati West local committee of CPI (M) was held on May 10 under the presidentship of Pradip Sur at the Bidyamandir HS School, Rest Camp, Pandu, to apprise the general public of the significance of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) about which a lot of misleading ideas are being spread among people by interested circles to confuse and misguide them. It was pointed out that the determination of ones citizenship will be settled on the basis of the NRC of 1951 and the pre- March 24, 1971 voters list. Names of those people that do not appear in the lists of 1951 on 1971, will be inserted on the basis of relevant documents presented by them. This point was clarified and explained to set at rest all misgivings and confusions regarding NRC upgradation.

Speakers who took part in this meeting included among others Samir Das, veteran CPI(M) leader and the state general secretary of the party Deben Bhattacharjee. They all appealed to the people to come forward without fear and doubt to include their names in the NRC and promised to help them in case of any problem.

Earlier a minutes silence was observed to pay homage to the memory of late Dr Amalendu Guha and the people who died in the devastating Nepal earthquakes. Condolence resolutions were tabled by Seema Biswas, secretary of the local committee. Bijon Roy explained the purpose of the meeting.
