Meeting held on FIFA U-17 World Cup

GUWAHATI, April 11 - An important meeting was held at the office chamber of the Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi yesterday to discuss about the preparation for the forthcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in India from October 6 to 28.

The tournament will be conducted in six venues � Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Guwahati.

Babul Supriyo, Union Minister of Heavy Industries; Praful Patel, president, AIFF; Injeti Srinivas, Secretary Sports, Govt of India along with the Nodal Officers of six venues were present in the meeting.

Sanjeev Gogoi, Nodal Officer of the Guwahati venue along with Lakhya Konwar, Member Secretary, SLAC represented the city in the crucial meeting where discussions took place on the progress of works in different venues.

Both Konwar and Gogoi explained in detail about the renovation and developmental works at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai here where altogether nine matches will be played. The representatives informed in the meeting that 90 per cent work have been completed in the Guwahati venue and the remaining work will be completed at the earliest. The meeting expressed its satisfaction over the presentation.

Discussions also took place on the theme song of the championship and the opening ceremony which will be held in New Delhi on October 5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest in the inaugural function, informed Gogoi.

Today, the Assam Chief Secretary convened a meeting to take stock about the preparation of the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium and other practice venues for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Senior officers of the concerned departments were instructed to complete all the work so that the U-17 World Cup could be organised in a befitting manner. Guwahati will host six Group E league matches, one pre-quarterfinal, one quarterfinal and a semifinal.
