Meeting discusses ways to tackle artificial flood

GUWAHATI, March 31 - A meeting to lay out plans to resolve artificial flood and waterlogging problems in and around the city was held today evening under the chairmanship of Virendra Mittal, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman, District Disaster Management Authority, at the conference hall of the DC office here.

Asking for a proper coordination among the departments to deal with the perennial problem, Mittal ordered the officials concerned to conduct a joint survey in the problem-affected areas so that steps can be taken accordingly.

The meeting was held in presence of Ravi Amrohi, Chief Engineer and Khindar Ram, Senior Divisional Manager, NF Railway, D Hazarika, Superintending Engineer, PWD (R), T Rahman, Chief Engineer, Guwahati Municipal Corporation, K Talukdar, Project Officer, DDMA, Kamrup (M), Pradip Ray, Ward Councillor, GMC Ward No. 3, among other officials.

Issues like cleaning up of the drains near the northern side of the railway track from Chandmari to B Baruah Road over bridge, pumping out of the flood water near the AGP office, Ambari, eviction of illegal encroachers near the drain at Happy Villa, Uzanbazar, cleaning up of railway drain near Bhootnath and Kamakhya Nagar behind the Kamakhya Railway Station and eviction drive at Sakuntala Colony for cleaning up of drains were discussed in the meeting.

The DC also asked the Railways, GMC and PWD to jointly make a proposal for permanent solution to such problems in the city.

He sought help from the ward councillors to resolve the problems and ordered railway and GMC authorities to complete all the work by April 15.
