Meet recalls Parvati Prasad Baruva�s contributions

GAURIPUR, June 20 � Under the aegis of the Dhubri District Sahitya Sabha and in collaboration with the Alamganj Branch Sahitya Sabha, the �Smriti Divas� of lyricist and poet Parvati Prasad Baruva was observed on the premises of Rangamati College, Alamganj near here recently.

The day-long programme included flag-hoisting, garlanding the portrait of the famous poet, smriti tarpan and recitation competition of poems of the lyricist among students. The open meeting presided over by the district president was addressed by Rong Bong Terang, president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha.

In his speech, Terang lauded the efforts of the Sabha to bring its glory to the rural areas. Ambika Charan Chaudhury, the Chilaray Award winner and a famous writer attended the meeting as chief guest and expressed his happiness over organising of the memorial day of a famous son like Parvati Prasad Baruva.

Prof Bhaben Kalita also attended the meeting as appointed speaker. The memorial meeting was attended by the students, teachers and the office bearers of the district Sahitya Sabha.

Alumni meet: The Alumni Association meet of Gauripur Pramathesh Baruah College was held on June 15 with a day-long programme.

The flag of the association was hoisted by Ghanakanta Das, principal of the college and was followed by garlanding the portrait of legendary film maker Pramathesh Baruah by his son Shyamalesh Barua. Earthen lamps were lit by Nripendra Nath Dihidar, social worker of the locality.

The inaugural ceremony of Pramathian, the mouthpiece of the Alumni Association was held under the presidentship of Azad Ali Shaikh, president of the association. The Pramathian was formally released by Dr Birendra Nath Dutta, the founder principal of the college.

In his speech, he recalled his memories while he was at Gauripur and said that there was a turnaround in his life and he subsequently dedicated his life for the spread of the folk-culture of undivided Goalpara district. He also appreciated the efforts of the association for organising such an event. The meeting was also addressed among others by GS Pandey, GNP Kann, AM Md Omar and GK Das, principal of the college.

Earlier NI Chaudhury, working president of the alumni association expressed his gratitude for attending the ceremony in his welcome address. The meet was attended by a large number of ex-students, teachers and well-wishers.
