Meet on significance of National Press Day

GUWAHATI, Nov 16 - A discussion on the significance of National Press Day was held at the state headquarters of the Journalists Association of Assam (JAA) here today.

President of JAA DN Chakravartty explained the role of the Press Council of India as a statutory body to protect, guide and monitor the functioning of the press in the country and to create a conducive climate to enable the journalists to serve the cause of a free press without any fear or favour.

Bhupen Goswami, chief adviser, JAA, stressed the need for constitution of a media council and urged the Chief Minister to enact a journalist protection Act and also to safeguard the genuine interests of the journalists functioning in the State.

Dalim Phukan, general secretary, Sudip Sarma Choudhury, assistant secretary and executive member Indrani Sarkar also addressed the function.
