GUWAHATI, June 1 � A meeting has been convened on June 6 at the conference hall of the Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute with the objective of forming a forum for funding and promoting cancer research in the North-eastern region.
�Cancer research is an integral part of not only cancer prevention but for control as well. However, at times, constraints due to resources and funds remain stumbling blocks. In view of that, a non-profit, non-political forum and professionally managed forum with the sole objective of funding and promoting cancer research in this part of the world has been conceived. A meeting has been convened by Dr Manigreeva Krishnatreya and Dr Ashok Kumar Das of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute on June 6 at 12 noon at the conference hall of the institute,� said a statement.
The main agenda of the meeting will be the formation of a governing body.
Dr Umesh Chandra Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, PP Varma, former Chief Secretary of Assam, Dr GK Rath, Head of National Cancer Institute-India, and Dr Jagadish Mahanta, former Director of Regional Medical Research Centre at Dibrugarh, have agreed to be the patrons of the forum.
In addition, Dr A Nandakumar, Director In-charge, NCDIR-ICMR, Dr R Sankarnarayan, Head of Cancer Screening Group at International Agency for Research on Cancer, Dr SY Lim, consultant Radiation Oncologist from the Singapore National Cancer Centre, GL Agarwala, Chairman of GLP Social Circle, Guwahati, and Dr Kumar Alok Pathak, Professor of Surgery, University of Manitoba, Canada, have agreed to be advisors of this forum, it added.
