Meet on biodiversity conservation at Missamara school

DERGAON, Aug 13 - An awareness programme on biodiversity conservation was held today at Missamara Girls� High School under the aegis of the Golaghat Forest Division and in association with the Dergaon Forest Beat Office, nature organisation Aashray and Missamara Uttar Anchalik Biodiversity Management Committee.

The programme, organised in connection with the 70th Independence Day celebrations, was initiated by the headmistress of the school, Lily Hazarika, and Dergaon Forest Beat Officer Manoj Boro. Seventy saplings were planted at the school campus. Later, an awareness meeting was chaired by Nandeswar Bora. School headmistress Hazarika delivered the welcome address, while Dulal Morag, an official of the Dergaon Forest Beat Office, stated the objectives of the meeting. Dergaon Forest Beat Officer Boro highlighted the objectives of the biodiversity conservation programme in the Golaghat Forest Division. He said that the programme was being held at Missamara Girls� HS School and Bilotria High School.

Aashray secretary Sanjoy Kumar Hazarika spoke on the different aspects of biodiversity conservation as well as causes of loss of biodiversity in Assam in general and Golaghat district in particular. He also cited the monkey menace in Dergaon, which is a direct result of biodiversity loss in the greater Dergaon area. Hazarika also presented a documentary called Amulya Jaibo Baichitryata.

The meeting was also attended by Forest official Binod Chandra Bora, Pranab Rajkhowa, Imran Hussain, Rajib Baruah and Anil Das. Teachers Prakash Neog and Surendra Kumar Baruah and student Nayanmoni Bora put questions to the resource person. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by the school headmistress.
