Meet held on restructuring of bridge in Barpeta

BARPETA, Sept 10 - The low-lying structure of the concrete bridge over the Pahumara river at Dhumarkur on National Highway 31 is supposed to be the main reason behind the devastating floods during the last few years in that area, which has caused immense damage in the northern part of the district.

This matter was discussed in a meeting of the District Development and Monitoring Committee held here today and the meet requested the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to restructure it with more height so that the current of the river is not obstructed.

After listening to all officials concerned, MP Abdul Khalek, who is also the president of the committee, directed the officials concerned to take adequate measures in this regard.

The meeting was attended by Chenga and Bhabanipur MLAs Sukur Ali Ahmed and Abdul Kalam Azad respectively, Deputy Commissioner Munindra Sarma, Zila Parishad chairperson Najima Ahmed, Zila Parishad chief executive officer Pranab Kumar Sarma, heads of all the district-level departments, a section of gaon panchayat presidents and some anchalik panchayat presidents.

Khalek directed the representatives of the Railways to submit a progress report on the proposal to construct a new rail line passing through Lengtisinga, Barpeta, Sarthebari and Hajo, the stoppages of long-distance trains at Pathsala and Sarupeta and the upgrade of Guagacha and Niz Sariha railway stations.

The meeting reviewed all the ongoing projects and schemes in the district. Those present in the meeting unanimously opined that the benefits of the schemes should reach the common people.
