Medicinal plant growers meet

By STAFF correspondent

SHILLONG, Nov 29 - A daylong buyer-seller meet of traditional medicinal plant growers and practitioners was held here today, in which concerns over market access was raised.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests CP Marak said that the weakest link for traditional medicinal plant farmers and practitioners is the lack of market linkages.

Marak said that the State Government needs to step in to improve the marketing link so that the farmers are benefited. He also stressed the need of improving post-harvest handling of medicinal plants.

Marak pointed out that purity and potency of the ingredients of traditional medicines can be maintained through technological interventions.

Stating that the practice of traditional healing and traditional medicine in Meghalaya dates back to several centuries, the CCF said awareness is required to spread the knowledge about the benefits of traditional medicinal plants.
