Medical team in Jiribam to review COVID-19 scene

IMPHAL, July 7 - In the aftermath of detection of several COVID-19 cases among police personnel in Jiribam, a team of medical officers today rushed to the district along with necessary items.

Soon after their arrival at Jiribam town in a helicopter, the team held a meeting with the district administration and public representatives to identify a proper place to set up a COVID Care Centre, sources said. Jiribam is located about 220 km west of Imphal.

It may be noted here that the entire Jiribam district has been put under complete lockdown and curfew till further notice or till July 15 due to the sudden spurt in the number of COVID-19 cases.

The decision to clamp the lockdown on Jiribam district was taken in a meeting of the Manipur consultative committee on COVID-19, after 28 police personnel stationed in the district headquarters tested positive for the disease. An assistant sub-inspector posted at Jiribam had tested positive earlier. On Monday, nine more police personnel tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Thangmeiband Polem Leikao locality in Imphal West district has been declared a containment zone after a seven-year-old girl who was undergoing home quarantine, tested positive for COVID 19.

The Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West district issued an order on July 5 in this regard.

According to an official source, the girl had returned from New Delhi on June 22 along with her parents. On June 28, the parents were found positive and the girl was negative.

Earlier, the parents were shifted to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), while the girl was put under home quarantine here. Now the girl has also been shifted to the COVID care facility at the JNIMS.

As on July 7, Manipur recorded a total of 1,430 COVID-19 cases. Of them, 659 are active cases and 771 persons have been discharged following recovery.

Altogether 7,477 people are presently staying at quarantine centres, including paid quarantine centres, while 48,320 others have completed their quarantine, sources said. So far 2,94,024 persons have been screened at various entry points of the State, while 56,584 others have undergone COVID-19 tests in the State.
