Medical staff protest assault on colleague

KALAIGAON, July 2 - Doctors and medical staff of the 30-bed Khoirabari PHC in Udalguri district staged a protest recently protesting against the physical assault on a doctor by the relatives of a patient.

The incident created sensation in Khoirabari area following the protest of the medical staff. According to information, a seriously injured patient was admitted to Khoirabari PHC on the night of June 27. Doctors on duty referred the patient in a critical condition to the GMCH for treatment. Unfortunately, due to non-availability of 102 or 108 ambulance services, the patient could not be shifted to the GMCH in time. The irate relatives of the patient physically assaulted one Dr Sarma on duty. However, the situation was brought under control by senior doctors.

Unfortunately, in another incident, relatives of another patient created havoc in the hospital premises following the absence of the doctor. The patient was brought from Bhergaon when the doctor on duty was at his residence for dinner. Refusing to wait for the doctor to arrive, relatives of the patient started breaking down the furniture of the hospital. Police and other people however managed to control the situation.

The doctors and medical staff of the hospital resorted to an agitation the following day on June 28 by refraining from duty wearing black badges. Maheswar Boro, MLA, Kalaigaon LAC and Lwmsrao Daimari, EM, BTC visited the hospital but the situation remained the same till the arrival of Joint Director of Health, Udalguri. According to reliable sources, Khoirabari PHC has been running without the required numbers of doctors and medical staff, causing the repetition of unpleasant incidents time and again.
