JORABAT, Feb 4 - World Cancer Day was observed at Shankardev Nagar village near Jorabat today, where an awareness programme on cancer prevention and early detection was organised jointly by the Jorabat branch of the All Assam Students� Union and local people.
Dr MN Baruah, managing director and Dr Gitartha Roymedhi, chief operating officer of North East Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, Jorabat and bodybuilder, Mr Guwahati and Mr Dimoria Deep Kalita were present as guests during the programme.
Dr Baruah, who is also a well-known head and neck cancer surgeon and an active member of the Union of International Cancer Control (UICC) based in Switzerland, threw light on the warning signs and symptoms of cancer, its probable causes and the choices of treatment. He said cancer can be cured if the victim receives the right treatment at the right place and right time.
Dr Roymedhi laid stress on the necessity of biopsy for diagnosis of cancer. �Biopsy never makes the disease aggressive as people think. Cancer is a fear that should be eliminated from people�s mind. Awareness programmes need to be organised where the common people can be educated about the real facts of this disease. Only medical science is not enough to win the war against cancer. We will have to accomplish our social responsibilities too,� he said.
Deep Kalita, an upcoming bodybuilder of the State explained the need to stay fit and role of proper nutrition to live a healthy life. �Staying fit and healthy reduces the risk of developing cancer in the body,� he said.
