BARPETA, Sept 10 - A Subdivisional Medical Officer-cum-incharge of Chenga BPHC in Barpeta district was arrested today in connection with the multi-crore insurance scam that surfaced in the State about a year ago.
According to information, Dr Nurul Islam in charge of Chenga BPHC was arrested today on charge of issuing fake death certificate facilitating syphoning of huge amount of money from insurance companies. Giving details about the involvement of Dr Islam, a police officer informed that one Mojammil Hoque, a resident of Palhaji in Barpeta district died in April 2016. But Dr Islam issued a death certificate against him stating the date of death as May 5, 2017 which facilitated the family of Mojammil Hoque to withdraw several lakhs of rupees from various insurance companies.
Police has registered a case no 1619/19 under Section 120B/420/106/409/468/471 under IPC and is investigating the matter.
It may be mentioned here that more than 15 persons including a gaonburha, doctors, agents of insurance companies and beneficiaries have been arrested so far and chargsheet has been submitted to the court. Dr Islam is known to be the seniormost government employee arrested in this connection.
