DIBRUGARH, Nov 17 - The Office of District Information and Public Relations here, Dibrugarh Press Club (DPC) and Greater Dibrugarh Press Club (GDPC) jointly celebrated National Press Day at the training hall of the Office of the Deputy Commissioner. The event was sponsored by the district administration here.
Eminent litterateur Dr Nagen Saikia, the key speaker at the event while delivering his talk on the significance of news dissemination said that journalism as a profession is sacred and central for a society.
�In today�s era, there is almost nothing which is unbiased. All take sides and are inclined to favour someone.
But in journalism, being biased can prove fatal to the society. All mediapersons need to adhere to the ethics of journalism and ought to control negative human tendencies for the greater interest of humanity. We have a major role to play in building the society at large through our honest writings,� said Dr Saikia.
Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha inaugurated the seminar and stated that media as a whole has helped the administration to be transparent.
�Whatever is reported, we take it as a feedback and try to improve ourselves. The media has been guiding and motivating us in executing our duties,� opined the Deputy Commissioner.
However, he expressed concern over the rising graph of violence against mediapersons. Acknowledging the constructive role of the media in the district, the DC said that the administration is taking the security concerns of the media fraternity seriously.
The entire proceedings of the event was anchored by DIPRO Sulakshana Mithi Kachari. Senior journalist Ikbal Ahmed, DPC secretary Anil Poddar, GDPC president Manjit Borah also addressed the gathering. Additional Deputy Commissioner Deepu Kumar Deka and Additional Deputy Commissioner Sushanta Kumar Dutta also attended the programme.
A similar programme was organised by the Centre for Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication (CSJMC) of Dibrugarh University at the Indira Miri Conference Hall. Along with the valedictory session of the ongoing national seminar at CSJMC, National Press Day was observed in the presence of eminent personalities like Professor Vir Bala Aggarwal, former chairperson of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Himachal Pradesh in Shimla, Professor Satyakam Borthakur of the Centre for Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication and Professor KV Nagaraja, former Pro Vice Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar.
