Media sensitised on child labour

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, June 9 - A sensitisation workshop for print and electronic media personnel on child labour was organised on Friday by the district administration with support from UNICEF at the district training hall of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here.

The objective of the workshop was to motivate newsmen to engage themselves in the eradication of all forms of child labour in the district through their journalistic works. The programme was also aimed at making an appeal to the media to play a pro-active role in creating mass awareness among the masses in checking social evils like illegal sale of liquor, gambling etc.

Resource persons for the programme included Assistant Labour Commissioner Kanpai Das and former Childline activist Monalisa Bora. Superintendent of Police Gautam Bora, Additional Deputy Commissioner and Nodal Officer of the District Task Force for Child Protection Subhan Goala and District Child Welfare Committee member Kiran Borah also spoke briefly on the problems and challenges of child labour.

Chief guest of the function Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri attended the full session and also interacted with the attending newsmen. She urged upon the mediapersons to give wide publicity to news about rescue of child labour, more particularly of those engaging children and violating laws so that fear of the law prevailed.

I would like to appeal to the media fraternity to cooperate with us in making the district child labour-free, the DC said.

The programme was anchored by District Information and Public Relations Officer Sulakshana Mithi Kachari. Some 58 newsmen of the district attended the programme.
