GUWAHATI, Nov 16 - Journalist Association of Assam (JAA), in collaboration with National Union of Journalist India (NUJI) observed National Press Day today.
In this connection a meeting was held in the conference hall of the Rashtriya Khabar North East Correspondent office here�where appointed speaker and�national vice president of NUJI Bhupen Goswami delivered the keynote address on this year�s theme � �Ethics in Journalism�.
�With its commitment to uphold truth, probity and objectivity, media is helping in building a just and corruption-free society,� Goswami �said. �In the last 12 years, 11 media houses and 877 journalists have been attacked, reported IFJ. So we need a protection Act immediately,� he added.
Several other speakers including�Sudip Sarma Chaudhury, Sabyasachi Sharma, Dipamoni Deka, Rakesh Kumar, Anjan Bora and Kanak Hazarika while greeting the media people, urged them to work for society just like a honeybee that�collects sweet honey from the core of the flowers�and at the same time it can pinch hard whenever the situation demands.
Earlier, presiding�over the�meeting, Journalist Association of Assam president Dhirendra Nath Chakravartty spoke on the significant role of the Press in building a society with positive thought and creative writing. �A society�or a nation will become�healthy and prosper in the real sense�only when�their journalism�is strong and positive. The media is called the fourth pillar of democracy. It is said that journalists are the mirror of society, which brings out the truth even in adverse circumstances,� Chakravartty said.
Meanwhile, the NUJI and JAA reiterated their demand for a Journalists Protection Act to ensure safety and end �impunity� for attacks on journalists. The two organisations said that the media is now the nerve centre of society and plays a vital role in disseminating information to the people.
Press Day at GU: On the occasion of National Press Day, the Department of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University performed a streetplay titled Ram Bibah at three venues on the GU campus. Organised by the 1st semester students of the department, the streetplay revolves around the idea of how the menace of fake news has disturbed the balance of the present-day media scenario of the country.
Department head Ankuran Dutta said the streetplay was a very good initiative to bring awareness among the public. He also mentioned the convergence of media to establish direct contact with the public through streetplays and other similar mediums, said a press release issued by Baikuntha Boro, a 1st semester student of the host department.
