Media fraternity stages protest against Army atrocity

DIBRUGARH, Jan 24 - The Dibrugarh District Journalists� Association in collaboration with the Dibrugarh Press Club and Greater Dibrugarh Press Club today staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here in protest against the recent midnight attack on a news reporter in Chabua by the Army from the 9th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles.

Swarup Jyoti Chetia, the Chabua-based reporter of a television channel and president of the Chabua Press Club was reportedly dragged out by the Army from his house on the intervening night of January 12 and 13, 2018 for his suspected involvement in providing sensitive information to the banned ULFA (I) outfit. He was reportedly beaten up and interrogated by the Army at the Paltan Bazar Army Station here before handing him over to the police at Dibrugarh Sadar PS in the evening on January 13, 2018.

The media fraternity termed the midnight assault on the reporter as an attack on the fourth pillar of democracy. The protesting mediapersons were joined by representatives from various organizations like the All Assam Students� Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Mottock Yuba Chatra Sanmilan, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad, Chetana, CPI (ML), AGP (A), Chabua Press Club, Lahoal Press Club and several others.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the district unit of the journalists� body urged upon Sarbananda Sonowal to institute an enquiry into the human rights violation by the Army and also demanded stringent punishment to the guilty.
