Medanta to set up hospital in Guwahati

By R Dutta Choudhury

GUWAHATI, Feb 1 - MedantaThe Medicity, one of the biggest multi-superspecialty hospitals in the country, is planning to set up one such hospital in Assam so that the people of the North East will not have to go to Delhi and other parts of the country for specialised treatment. The hospital is also planning to train up talented doctors of the region to provide quality healthcare to the people.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Chairman of Medanta, Dr Naresh Trehan, who is a renowned cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon, said that he would be attending the ensuing Global Investors Summit in Guwahati to explore the ways for setting up a multi-superspecialty hospital in the city, which would be able to cater to the requirements of the people of the North East region.

Dr Trehan, who returned to India from the United States of America in 1988 and set up the Escorts Heart Institute in Delhi, said that he decided to come back to his motherland to provide better healthcare services to the people of India. He later formed MedantaThe Medicity, which is now one of the biggest multi-superspecialty hospitals in the country.

Dr Trehan, who has been awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India for his contribution to medical science, admitted that a large number of people from the North East have to visit superspecialty hospitals in other parts of the country for treatment and quite a substantial number of patients from the region also visits Medanta in Gurgaon. He said that his aim is to provide such specialised treatment in the region itself so that the people will not have to take the trouble of travelling to Gurgaon and other parts of the country for treatment.

The renowned heart surgeon said that Medanta has already set up hospitals in several other parts of the country, including Indore, Ranchi, Lucknow and Patna. This is for the first time I will be visiting Assam to explore the possibility of setting up a multi-superspecialty hospital in the North East and may be later we can explore the ways of setting up satellite units in other parts of the region. He pointed out that apart from patients of the region, people from North Bengal areas would also be benefited from the hospital.

Replying to a question on the help that he would require from the Government of Assam to set up such a hospital, Dr Trehan said that during the Summit, he would have discussion with the Assam government in this regard. Normally we buy our own land to build hospitals. But, if the government wants to provide land, we may accept the same, he added. He revealed that it would take around three years from the date of commencement of work for such a superspecialty hospital to become fully operational.

Dr Trehan expressed the view that getting doctors to work in such a hospital should not be a problem. We normally train up our own doctors. We can train up the most talented doctors from the region to work in the hospital and we can also give option to the doctors working in Delhi and other parts to come to the region if they want to do so. That is why, I believe that getting doctors to work in a superspecialty hospital will not be an issue, he added.
