SHILLONG, March 27 � Meghalaya Power Minister Clement Marak has informed the Assembly that the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeCL) will take loan from financial institutions to repay Rs 457 crore it owed to different private power companies.
The Power Minister added that the State Government has requested the Central Government to waive 60 per cent of the dues owed by MeCL. Subsequently, the NEEPCO has waived 60 per cent of its debt, he told the House recently.
Asked by opposition member Jemini Mawthoh whether power tariff would be increased after taking the loan, the Power Minister said that increase of tariff is decided based on the recommendation of the Regulatory Commission.
Deputy Chief Minister, RC Laloo said that the State Government has made an all out effort last year to help the flood-affected victims of Garo Hills.
After the flood, the State Government set up 115 relief camps in the affected areas where 50,000 people, who were displaced by the flood, were provided shelter, food and medicine.
He informed the House that the State Government had requested from the Central Government a package of Rs 1044.34 crore to help the victims. However, the Centre has drastically reduced the package to about Rs 100 crore.
Earlier, Leslee, moving a motion, alleged the Government has failed in its effort to help the flood-affected victims and delay in taking steps cost the lives of 54 people.
