Me-Dam-Me-Phi observed in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia

DIBRUGARH, Jan 31 - The Tai Educational and Cultural Centre located at Boiragimoth here observed Me-Dam-Me-Phi, the annual religious festival of the Tai Ahom community, with religious fervour.

Lohit Konwar, president of the Centre, initiated the day�s event by hoisting the institutions flag, which was followed by a mass invocation of the Ahom ancestors. Mulong Dhaneshwar Konwar led the maidam tarpan where people sought the blessings of their ancestors.

Konwar also presided over the open session where Mulong Mukheswar Gogoi and Thul Konwar were felicitated by the Centre. A souvenir, Lit Mai Hung, edited by Lokeshwar Bora, was released on the occasion. The New Year calendar printed by the Centre was also released.

In keeping with the community festival, several Ahom cultural dances and songs, which are on the verge of fading into oblivion, were presented before the gathering. Dances like �Lailum Kham,� �Rakchangmai� and �Aising Lao� and �Tai Jatiya Sangeet� were performed.

Puna Gogoi, secretary, Tai Educational and Cultural Centre, Durlav Gogoi, assistant secretary, and several other distinguished members attended the programme. Me-Dam-Me-Phi was also observed at Borborooah Sui-ka-Pha Bhawan where priests performed maidam tarpan and other traditional rituals.

Tinsukia Correspondent adds: Along with the rest of the State, Me-Dam-Me-Fi, the most Ahom festival to pay homage to forefathers, was observed with traditional rituals in Tinsukia on Wednesday. It was observed centrally at the Tai Sanskriti Chorcha Kendra at Sripuria.

The Kendra flag was unfurled by its president, Manoj Kumar Bora. The maidam tarpan was initiated by the general secretary of the Kendra, Pranjal Rajkonwar. Competitions like drawing, go-as-you-like, tug-of-war, musical chairs, etc., were organised.
