MDA allies for reinforcing check gates

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Aug 9 - In a meeting today, partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) advised the State Government to reinforce the check gates following the publication of the final draft NRC in Assam.

The MDA comprises the National Peoples Party, United Democratic Party, Peoples Democratic Front, Hill State Peoples Democratic Party and BJP.

After the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that there is fear and concern among the people of Meghalaya about possible influx after the draft NRC was published in the neighbouring State in July.

The MDA has advised the Government to immediately strengthen the check gates in the State to tackle infiltration. The alliance partners also called for setting up additional check gates wherever necessary, Tynsong said.

The MDA allies also asked the Government to revisit the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016. The Deputy Chief Minister said that wherever necessary, the Act must be improvised and strengthened.

Meanwhile, Tynsong, who is also the chairman of the high-level committee constituted by the Government to find ways to relocate the residents of the Punjabi Lane here, said the panel has sought more time to give its recommendations.

The committee has sought additional documents from departments like Urban Affairs, Municipality and others for scrutiny. It studied the survey report of the area today.
