MBBS seats reserved for HS top ten rank holders

GUWAHATI, June 18 � The Assam Government has decided to keep seats reserved for the top ten rank holders in the Higher Secondary science examination in the MBBS courses in the medical colleges of the State. The admissions in the medical colleges will be held from June 19 to 25.

The formal notification regarding the reservations was issued by the Director of Medical Education on Wednesday. The admission of the rank holders will be held on June 19.

Official sources told The Assam Tribune that at present, the total number of seats in the medical colleges of the State is 726, of which, 15 per cent are reserved for the students who would come from other parts of the country on the all-India quota. This will be the second batch of Tezpur Medical College and fourth of Barpeta Medical College.

Sources further revealed that the State Government has initiated the process of setting up four new medical colleges in the State and the preliminary works have started. The land acquisition process for Dhubri Medical College is almost complete, while the Nagaon Medical College will start functioning from the Nagaon Civil Hospital in the initial stage. The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) will provide necessary land for Kokrajhar Medical College, while the land acquisition process is on for setting up of a medical college in Lakhimpur.

However, sources admitted that it would take at least a couple of years for the new colleges to become functional. Following the creation of infrastructure, the principals and other staff of the new medical colleges will have to be appointed and classes can start only after receiving formal nod from the Medical Council of India.
