GUWAHATI, Oct 5 - The people of Mayong area have given the State Government ten days time from today to free their land from the clutches of encroachers, whom they have described as foreign nationals.
If the government fails to drive these encroachers away from the land belonging to the indigenous people of Mayong, they will undertake a drive on their own to free their land from these encroachers after ten days. And for the untoward situation arising out of this drive, the government only would be held responsible, said the people of Mayong in a resolution adopted unanimously at a meeting held under the aegis of the Prabrajan Virodhi Manch on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri here this afternoon after conclusion of a two-day sit-in demonstration organised by the Manch since yesterday at the same site.
The people of Mayong under the banner of the Prabrajan Virodhi Manch staged the sit-in demonstration to register their protest against the failure of the State Government to free government and community land from the clutches of the encroachers. The members of the Manch resented the failure of the government to free the land of the indigenous peoples community land encroached upon by some illegal occupants in Mayong area of Morigaon district. The government assured the local people on several occasions of steps to evict such encroachers, but in vain, they alleged.
They also resented the fact that the present government in the State has been following the policy of the preceding government in matters of evicting the encroachers from government and community land. Describing the encroachers of Mayong as foreign nationals, they alleged that the State Government has been maintaining a mysterious silence over the issue of physical attack carried out by these encroachers on the indigenous people.
They demanded a clear cut statement from the State Government on the time frame of its driving away such encroachers from places like Mayong, Kuruwa, Dholpur, etc.
