ITANAGAR, May 1 - The International Workers� Day, also known as the May Day, was observed across Arunachal Pradesh today by different workers� organisations.
In Tawang, the North East Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Labourers� Union celebrated the May Day at the Jang outdoor stadium, where the chairman of Arunachal Pradesh Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, Jalley Sonam, was the chief guest and Leki Gombu, chairman of the Jang Cooperative Society, was the guest of honour.
Greeting the members, Sonam urged the BRO workers to get themselves registered under the Labour Board of Arunachal Pradesh to enjoy the benefits being provided by the Government.
He also remembered former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister, late Dorjee Khandu, on the occasion for constituting the Labour Welfare Board in Arunachal Pradesh during his regime.
Workers� units from different locations of Tawang district presented cultural programmes to mark the day.
The International Workers� Day was also celebrated at Itanagar by members of the Joint Working Committee of Arunachal Pradesh Trade Unions at its office premises.
Committee chairman Changma Tajo, who hoisted the union flag, highlighted the importance of the May Day. Recalling formation of the joint committee of the trade unions, he stated that there are 18 trade unions under its banner now, which are ready to fight for the rights of the workers of the State.
The Don Bosco Youth Centre (DBYC), Itanagar, organised a felicitation programme for workers and also observed the eighth death anniversary of former Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu. Father Cyriac, DBYC director, explained the twin objectives of the programme � paying homage to late Khandu and honouring the work force of various Don Bosco and private institutions in the capital complex.
He said: �Late Dorjee Khandu was the person who laid the foundation stone of the DBYC in 2009 and on his memorial day, we would like to pay homage to him and also honour the domestic staff who are the real backbone of our institutions.�
Father CC Jose, Director of Don Bosco College, highlighted the importance of the day and spoke of the contributions of late Khandu towards the growth of the DBYC and the progress of the State.
The chief guest of the function, Yumlam Kaha, Director of Social Justice, Empowerment and Tribal Affairs, commended the DBYC for taking up youth-friendly activities. He also called late Dorjee Khandu a visionary leader who proved his love for the State through hard work. Kaha also urged the workers to be proud of the contributions they make, and called upon the youth to imbibe the spirit of hard work.
Father Kamil Horo, parish priest of Catholic Church, Itanagar, thanked the parents for sending their children to the DBYC on holidays. He led the gathering in praying for the eternal peace of late Khandu�s soul and the safety and good health of all workers.
The DBYC holiday makers and workers� representatives performed cultural items on the occasion of the May Day.
