HAFLONG, Feb 17 - Against the proposed division of Dima Hasao on communal line, various apex bodies, student organizations and NGOs organized a peace rally here, which received a huge response from various communities of Dima Hasao on Monday.
The rally started from Cultural Institute Hall and marched through the major parts of Haflong town up to the council rotary and converged in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
Several speakers from various communities while addressing the gathering said the district of Dima Hasao has of late overcome several crisis and development has taken a momentum. Therefore, most of the citizens of Dima Hasao do not want any unpleasant situation to prevail in the district. Peace has become the foremost need and it should be maintained at any cost. They also insisted on brotherhood among various sections of people living in Dima Hasao.
Later, a representation against the proposed bifurcation of Dima Hasao district on communal lines was submitted to State Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma through the Deputy Commissioner, Dima Hasao district, Haflong by various organizations.
In the representation it was stated that the signatories of various organization of Dima Hasao district on behalf of the peace loving people of the hill district register their strong protest against the proposed demand of Indigenous Peoples Forum (IPF) for disintegration of existing Greater Dima Hasao district and to create a separate autonomous district with a separate autonomous council on communal lines.
