Mass signature campaign against NRC anomalies

By Correspondent

MANGALDAI, Dec 7 - The people of Sipajhar have expressed serious doubts over the NRC update process. A mass signature campaign submitted to the President of India, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister through the Deputy Commissioner, Darrang pointed out that the whole process of NRC update is full of errors and it will confirm and grant citizenship to all the children of illegal migrants born in India up to December 3 , 2014. Furthermore, these illegal migrants have also fabricated identity proofs and other documents to show themselves as either being born in India or having come to prior to March 25, 1971. There are also reports of the original NRC documents being tampered by inclusion of new names.

The representation demanded a correct NRC update process under the direct supervision of the Union Government, investigation either by the CBI or any central investigative agency into the anomalies in the procurement of fabricated identity proofs, involvement of State Government officials and tampering of the original NRC document.

The six-point charter of demands in the memorandum also included amendment of the Citizenship Act and the Section 3 thereof, by making the condition of citizenship by birth to be granted only if both parents are citizens, effective from March 25, 1971 instead of December 3 , 2004, reservation of land and land transfer only to those who were citizens of India in India and their descendents, implementation of clause 5.8 of the Assam Accord by detecting and deporting of foreigners, eviction of encroachment by illegal Bangladeshis from all land in Darrang including 77,420 bighas of land under Sipajhar revenue circle etc.

The several thousand signature campaigners led by Aboidha Prabrajon Birodhi Aikya Mancha, Asom, Sangrami Sathirtha Sanmilan, Darrang and Dakhsin Paschim Mangaldai Gowala Santha, Garukhuti assembled at the Bhebarghat Kristi Sanggha play ground here before taking out a procession to Deputy Commissioner office. The rally was also addressed by leaders of the above-mentioned organisations including advocate of the apex court, Upamanyu Hazarika and Ramesh Barua, former central executive leader of the AASU among others.

It may be mentioned here the Sangrami Sathirtha Sanmilan and Goala Santha have already filed a case in the District and Sessions court, Darrang in February last to evict illegal encroachers from the public grazing land in Sanowa GP in Sipajhar revenue circle. The case is being handled by Upamanyu Hazarika, serving as the legal counsellor of the complainants.
